Clifden will once again become the centre of the Connemara Pony world this August as the 101st Connemara Pony Show brings together breeders, riders, families, visitors and pony enthusiasts from Ireland and overseas.
Taking place from Tuesday 18 to Sunday 23 August 2026, this year’s programme combines world-class Connemara Pony competitions with live music, family entertainment, exhibitions, cultural events and the three-day Connemara Pony Sales.
Whether you are passionate about the breed, visiting Clifden for the first time or simply looking for a great day out, there will be something happening throughout Show Week.
Tuesday: A Welcoming Start at the Showgrounds
Show Week begins on Tuesday 18 August, with free admission to the Showgrounds.
The opening day includes a live demonstration by Connemara Therapeutic Riding CLG, highlighting how Connemara ponies can support well-being and participation among riders of all abilities.
Texas-based equestrians Margaret Kitts and Tim Cobb of ISE Equine Endeavors will then discuss the versatility of the Connemara Pony across different disciplines. Tim recently rode the five-year-old Connemara stallion Tresor D’or to a world title at the Western Dressage World Championships.
The afternoon will feature the All-Ireland Loose Jumping Championships, offering spectators the opportunity to see young ponies demonstrate their natural jumping ability without a rider.
The day concludes with the 101st Show Welcome Reception in the Show Marquee from 6pm. Locals, visitors and members of the international pony community are invited to enjoy live music from The Connemara Ramblers, along with drinks and light refreshments.
Visitors can also enjoy a special photography exhibition featuring memorable Show moments captured by Rynes Walker.
Wednesday: Traditional In-Hand Classes and Family Favourites
The traditional In-Hand Classes begin at 8.30am on Wednesday 19 August, with Connemara ponies assessed on their conformation, breed characteristics and overall presentation.
The 2026 Show will be officially opened by Minister Dara Calleary TD and Champion Trainer Willie Mullins.
Away from the main rings, the programme includes the Domestic Arts, Crafts and Produce Show, the always-popular Dog Show, Irish dancing and a Best Dressed Competition celebrating style, suitability and sustainability.
A new Most Sustainable Outfit category has been introduced for 2026, joining awards for Best Dressed, Most Appropriately Dressed Female and Most Appropriately Dressed Male.
Families can also take on the challenge of “Can You Tame Connie the Pony?”, a mechanical rodeo pony experience running throughout the afternoon. Clifden town will add to the atmosphere with street traders, crafts, local produce and face painting.
The evening continues with The Showdown at the Clifden Station House Hotel from 8pm.
Thursday: Ridden Classes and a Big Night in Clifden
The action begins early on Thursday 20 August, with Ridden and Working Hunter Classes from 7.30am at the Showgrounds. Competitions will include the Champion Ridden Pony and Irish Green Hunter Final.
Later that evening, attention moves to Clifden Town and Market Square.
Entertainment begins with Connie the Pony, face painting and a family-friendly magician. DJ Colin O’Malley will perform on the Gig Rig from 6.30pm, followed by leading Irish folk-rock band The Porter Bellys from 8pm.
At the Station House Theatre, the International Societies Reception will welcome representatives of Connemara Pony societies from around the world.
The evening will include a special tribute to renowned author, breeder and international judge Pat Lyne, with historian, author and former CPBS President Tom McLoughlin speaking about his contribution to the breed.
At 9pm, Connemara Pony Tales host Lucinda Kelly and breeder Joe Burke will record a special live podcast featuring winners, breeders and international guests from Show Week.
Friday: High Performance, Puissance and the Parade of Champions
Friday promises one of the most exciting days of the week.
Working Hunter Classes begin at 7.30am, followed by the Clifden High Performance Competition, where elite ponies will demonstrate jumping ability, movement and breed excellence.
New for 2026 is the Young Rider Derby, a fast-paced timed competition for riders aged between 16 and 25.
The programme will also feature the spectacular Puissance Competition, as Connemara ponies attempt to clear increasingly high fences.
In the evening, the celebrations move into Clifden town. Local traditional music, song and dance will begin on the Gig Rig at 5.30pm, followed by the much-anticipated Parade of Champions through the streets at approximately 6pm.
The Evergreen Brothers will perform from 7.30pm, while Mullarkey’s Bar will host a fancy-dress Barn Dance from 9.30pm.
Connemara Pony Sales and Weekend Events
The Connemara Pony Sales begin at Clifden Mart on Friday 21 August and continue until Sunday 23 August.
More than 650 lots are expected across the three days, attracting buyers from Ireland and overseas and offering ponies suitable for a wide range of disciplines.
On Saturday afternoon, Clifden Town Hall will host a Connemara and Ukrainian Market, featuring pony-themed stalls, local crafts, live music, children’s activities and complimentary tea and coffee.
Visitors can also enjoy live music throughout Clifden’s many pubs during the weekend.
